The European Patent Office (EPO) - the second-largest public institution in Europe, with 7 000 staff members and a self-financed annual budget of EUR 2bn - is looking for a lawyer to work in the Legal Research Service of the Boards of Appeal.

Under the European Patent Convention, the EPO Boards of Appeal (BoA) have final-instance jurisdiction with respect to European patents. As a lawyer in the Legal Research Service (a support unit for the BoA) you will perform the following tasks:

Main duties

  • Drafting reports and studies for the BoA and the President of the BoA on legal questions, in particular concerning civil procedure and patent law;
  • Analysing and reporting on the case law of the BoA as well as patent-related decisions handed down by national courts in the EPC contracting states;
  • Preparing patent law-related publications in English, French and German.

Other duties of the department, in particular

  • Supporting the President of the BoA and the Director of Legal Research and Administration on legal issues;
  • Participating in working parties and advisory committees;
  • Contributing to electronic information systems;
  • Giving lectures for internal and external training purposes.

Ideal candidate profile

  • Completed advanced university degree in law;
  • Excellent legal research, analysis and drafting skills;
  • Very good communication skills (oral and written);
  • Excellent knowledge of English (preferably native speaker or full professional/bilingual proficiency);
  • Very good practical IT skills, especially in using electronic search tools;
  • Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team;
  • A highly service-oriented approach;
  • A systematic, results-oriented approach;
  • Initiative and a willingness to innovate.

The ideal candidate will also have

  • knowledge or relevant experience in the field of industrial property, especially patent law;
  • professional experience in the job-related legal field;
  • an understanding of the functioning of the EPO and of the European patent system in general;
  • experience of working in an international environment.

Minimum qualifications

  • Diploma of completed university studies at master's level or - in exceptional cases - equivalent professional experience;
  • Excellent knowledge of one official language (English, French or German) and ability to understand the other two;
  • Citizenship of one of the member states of the European Patent Organisation.

Salary and benefits

The EPO offers competitive salaries, an excellent social package, and varied work in a modern international environment. The net (basic) monthly salary** for this vacancy ranges from EUR 5 317.77 to 7 530.93, depending on experience. In addition, depending on their personal circumstances, EPO staff may be entitled to relocation benefits and various allowances (e.g. household, dependants', childcare, education, expatriation, installation, rent and language allowance).

** after deduction of EPO internal tax and before deduction of staff contributions to the social-security and pension schemes.
