The September Talent Rush: Why Candidates Start Moving Again After Summer

  • A natural moment to reconsider
  • Recruitment picks up too
  • Don't wait until candidates are actively applying

September often brings a noticeable shift in the recruitment market. After the slower pace of July and August, candidates return from holidays, inboxes come back to life and career plans that were put on hold suddenly become priorities again.

For recruiters, this creates an important window. Professionals who showed little interest in moving before the summer may return with a different perspective, while candidates who had already been considering a change are finally ready to act.

A natural moment to reconsider

Summer gives people something they rarely have during a busy working year: distance from their day-to-day routine.

Time away can prompt employees to think about what they want next. Is there enough room to progress? Are they satisfied with their responsibilities, salary or flexibility? Are they still learning? And do they see themselves in the same organisation a year from now?

A holiday doesn't automatically produce a resignation letter, of course. But September has many of the characteristics of a fresh start. People return rested, routines change and there are still several productive months left in the year to make a career move.

For professionals working in EU affairs and international organisations, the return from summer also coincides with renewed political and institutional activity. Policy agendas become busier again, new projects get underway and attention turns towards the priorities ahead.

That can encourage candidates to think not only about whether they want to move, but where they want to position themselves next.

Employers are moving again too

Candidates aren't the only ones returning with new priorities.

Hiring managers are back at their desks, recruitment processes regain momentum and vacancies that were delayed over the summer begin moving again. Organisations also start looking more closely at what they need to achieve before the end of the year.

With Q4 approaching, the recruitment calendar can become surprisingly compressed. A search launched in September may still need several weeks of advertising, interviews and internal approvals before a successful candidate can begin their notice period.

Waiting until November to address an important hiring need can quickly turn recruitment into a race against the calendar.

More activity means more competition

The September increase in activity creates opportunities for recruiters, but there is another side to it: attractive candidates may suddenly have more options.

Someone who wasn't actively searching during the summer might now be speaking with several employers. Strong candidates can move from casually browsing vacancies to interviewing surprisingly quickly.

That makes the basics especially important.

Clear job descriptions, realistic requirements and efficient recruitment processes all help. So does giving candidates enough information to understand why a role is worth considering in the first place.

Employers that take weeks to respond or add unnecessary stages to the process risk losing candidates to organisations that are ready to move.

Don't wait until candidates are actively applying

September is also a good moment to look beyond new applications.

Revisit candidates who impressed during previous recruitment rounds. Reconnect with people in your talent pipeline. Consider professionals who may have been interested earlier in the year but weren't ready to change jobs at the time.

Their circumstances - or simply their priorities - may have changed.

And not every strong candidate will announce their intentions by immediately applying for multiple vacancies. Some will simply start browsing opportunities, updating their CV or becoming more receptive to conversations with recruiters.

That makes visibility particularly valuable at this time of year.

Make the most of the September window

The post-summer period isn't just about restarting recruitment after the holidays. It is a useful moment to reassess what you need, make sure your vacancies are competitive and reach candidates just as they begin thinking seriously about their next move.

September creates momentum on both sides of the hiring market.

For recruiters who are ready for it, that can make the beginning of autumn one of the most valuable periods of the year for finding the right people.
