We are looking for a Loan Officer to manage the EFSF/ESM loans to beneficiary Member States. The selected person will report to the Head of ALM and Lending and will work closely with the Principal responsible for Lending.

The European Stability Mechanism (ESM) is the crisis resolution mechanism for euro area countries. It provides financial assistance to Member States facing financing problems, and issues debt instruments to fund this financial support. The ESM is a unique place to work with around 175 individuals committed to making a difference to the future of the euro area. ESM staff comprises professionals from both the private and public sector.


  • Represent Lending in country teams covering financial assistance programmes;
  • Help in the structuring of new loans, including by:
    • Assisting in creating the high-level structure of the loan;
    • Managing disbursement processes and country requests;
    • Helping prepare all assistance-related documentation.
  • Support the life of the loans, including managing loan events such as waivers or amendments, and monitoring of EFSF/ESM contractual rights vis-a-vis beneficiary Member SFrom Subject Received Size Categories

  • Assist, as needed, in restructuring existing loans to BMS;
  • Use/build debt financial models to structure new loans and analyse possible amendments to existing loans;
  • Support BMS’ Debt Management Offices in the implementation of financial assistance;
  • Maintain the internal loan database and contribute with Middle Office to the administration of the loans;
  • The position may involve occasional travel.


  • Hold a university degree in Finance/Economics/Law or a business-related discipline;
  • Have three-to-eight years of experience in lending transactions/operations in the banking, financial, or development sector;
  • Have excellent knowledge of loan documentation and a good understanding of the purpose and use of loan terms and covenants, especially in long-term debt financing;
  • Excellent understanding of financial analysis and credit risk monitoring and assessment;
  • Knowledge of Excel and computer tools, ability to develop financial models for lending is required;
  • Experience in managing and/or risk monitoring of sovereign or long-term lending in an International Financial Institution would be an asset;
  • Knowledge of funding instruments and techniques used in the context of sovereign debt management would be an asset;
  • Excellent drafting and oral communication skills in English.

  • Strong analytical skills and ability to make sound judgements;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to manage direct contacts with senior officers/public sector officials.

Contractual conditions: 2-year fixed term contract, with possibility of extension
