We are looking for an experienced Spokesperson to assist the Head of Communication (who is also the Chief Spokesperson) in managing the ESM’s communication strategy and policy and in interacting with journalists and other key ESM stakeholders, with a focus on Southern Europe. The selected person will report to the Head of Communication.

The European Stability Mechanism (“ESM”) is the crisis resolution mechanism for euro area countries. It provides financial assistance to Members facing financing problems, and issues debt instruments to fund this financial support.

The ESM is a unique place to work with around 175 individuals committed to making a difference to the future of the euro area. It recruits talented professionals of all nationalities from both the private and public sector.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Communicate and connect with media from national capitals, particularly from southern Europe, in close coordination with the Head of Communication;
  • Establish a permanent close contact with key stakeholders (including spokespeople) from finance ministries and other institutions relevant for the ESM from southern Europe;
  • Establish a permanent close contact with key Brussels correspondents, especially from southern Europe, who report on issues related to the ESM and the euro area;
  • Establish a permanent close contact with key Brussels institutional interlocutors (including spokespeople), who deal with issues related to the ESM and the euro area;
  • Monitor debates in Brussels and in southern European euro area countries, and formulate ESM communication strategies accordingly;
  • Monitor and write press releases, newsletters, brochures, and various background documents to promote the activities of the ESM and convey the key messages to its various stakeholders and target audiences;
  • Coordinate and prepare press conferences, speeches, presentations, and other public appearances by the ESM’s Managing Director or other senior staff in close coordination with the Head of Communication;
  • Assist the Head of Communication in monitoring the development of new communications channels for the ESM;
  • Interact frequently and regularly with ESM staff at all levels to gain knowledge of all aspects of the organisation, and to quickly respond to all media queries;
  • Receive visitor groups and introduce them to the ESM;
  • Be prepared to take on communication related ad-hoc tasks and projects;
  • Be flexible to travel to Brussels regularly or to work partially from Brussels.

KEY BACKGROUND & EXPERIENCE

  • An academic degree at a leading university, preferably in economics, finance, social sciences, and/or a degree in journalism or communication;
  • At least eight years of relevant professional experience, including extensive experience in writing and editing press releases, editorials, and articles, while ensuring coherence in message and language;
  • Excellent inside knowledge of politics and economics of the euro area, particularly southern European euro area countries;
  • Excellent inside knowledge of the Brussels press corps, key communication actors in the EU institutions, and key opinion makers across the EU;
  • Very good understanding of the financial sector, macroeconomics, politics, and European institutions;
  • Very good knowledge of the domestic debates relevant to the ESM in euro area countries, particularly in southern Europe;
  • Proficient written and spoken English, the ESM’s only working language;
  • Proficient written and spoken knowledge of other EU languages, two of them being Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, or Greek.

Contractual conditions: Two-year fixed term contract
