Advanced scientific training is a core mission of the EMBL and EICAT is responsible for achieving this mission. EICAT activities are organized into two major areas: internal training directed towards scientists and trainees within EMBL, and external training directed towards the broader scientific community.
The Career Advisor will join the EICAT Internal Training Team and will report to EMBL's Head of Internal Scientific Training and Dean of Graduate Studies. You will work closely with the EIPOD Career Advisor and will interact with all colleagues in the Internal Training Team.
As our ideal candidate, you will be expected to work with a high degree of autonomy and to pro-actively handle all of your tasks. In particular, you will be involved in expanding the career development programme at EMBL, offering individual career advice in 1-to-1 meetings with fellows at all EMBL sites, and contributing to existing as well as new training formats geared at career development support. You will also be involved in evaluating career and training outcomes.
As Career Advisor you will further be involved in continuously developing and applying procedures to facilitate effective and efficient business systems for career support offered by the Postdoc and Graduate Offices, interfacing with all groups and stakeholders at EMBL involved in training. The position will be based in Heidelberg and require regular visits to EMBL's other sites.
As the successful candidate you are expected to have a higher-level university degree in science (including postdoctoral experience) and proven track record in mentoring activities (preferably for scientists). Previous professional exposure to both the academic and the private sector is desired. You should have demonstrated effective organizational skills and prefer to work in a proactive manner, across a broad range of functions and with maximum flexibility in a dynamic environment.
Excellent interpersonal skills are essential for this position, as is the ability to establish effective channels of communication with a large variety of stakeholders. The ability to pay attention to details and to ensure that confidential matters are dealt with efficiently and in a timely manner is essential. The position requires the highest degree of service orientation and a demonstrated ability to work in an international team.
Qualifications should include a first-rate command of written and spoken English.
Additional qualifications in the area of scientific and/or vocational skills training is advantageous. Practical experience in survey-design and data analysis would be advantageous. Experience in the management of projects and grants in the scientific context would be beneficial. Spoken and written knowledge of German is desirable, as is fluency in other languages, especially French, Italian or Spanish.
