The NATO Communication & Information Agency is recruiting for a Junior Data Scientist to join their dynamic team based in The Hague. The Agency’s team of international professionals, from 29 different nations are technology experts in their chosen fields and collectively our role is to help protect the lives of 1 billion people, contributing to maintaining world peace.

If successful, you will join our newly established Data Science team at an exciting time. Working as part of the wider Service Strategy team you will support the analysis of NATO’s data, capitalising the value of NATO’s data holdings, bringing value to the decision makers across the Alliance and enhancing their decision support tools. The team provides a wide spectrum of services including identification, sourcing and exploitation of cutting edge and disruptive technology. You will be involved in a variety of projects leveraging big data analytics, machine learning, artificial intelligence and visual analytics.

Role Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Branch Head, you will perform duties such as the following:

  • Support and assist data analysis across the Agency and NATO; maintaining data lakes and tools to process, analyse and learn from this data;
  • Support the extraction, transformation, loading (ETL) of structured and unstructured data;
  • Support maintenance, design and updates of the data lakes, including implementation of data science approaches and working with system owners to ensure data is readily available;
  • Manage and update the Agency toolset for data analysis and machine learning; contributing to modifications to our datasets, toolsets and metrics;
  • Support other NATO Bodies with their data science needs;
  • Remain up-to-date with new developments in data science and support the transition of innovative ideas into implementation;
  • Support the continuous improvement of activities, processes, products and services; and
  • Deputize for higher-grade staff and perform other duties as required.

Person Specification and experience required

Applicants should possess a combination of relevant qualifications and practical experience:

  • A degree at a nationally recognised University in a relevant discipline (such as; Data Science, Mathematics/Statistics, Computer Science or Engineering):
  • Master’s Degree and ideally 1 year practical experience;
  • Bachelor of Science degree and ideally 2 year’s practical experience.

Ideally, applicants will possess the following knowledge, experience and skills:

  • A deep understanding of the use of data science concepts including mathematical and statistical model, machine learning, deep learning, data engineering and data visualization;
  • Experience of working within a Big Data ecosystem; e.g., Hadoop, MapReduce, Spark;
  • Experience with state-of-the-art data science, analytics and data integration tools/programming language, for example: Python, Splunk, KNIME, SQL and No-SQL databases;
  • Experience with machine learning tools/AI; e.g., Watson, Microsoft Cognitive Toolkit, TensorFlow; is desirable;
  • Planning and executing ETL processes;
  • Experience in data presentation tools e.g. Microsoft Power BI, Spotfire, Tableau, Kibana;
  • Proven ability and skills in communicating effectively, both orally and in writing, including presentation skills.

  • Business travel to NATO and national (NATO and non-NATO) facilities as well as frequent travel between the NCI Agency offices;
  • May be required to undertake duty travel to operational theatres inside and outside NATO boundaries.

Language Skills: A thorough knowledge of one of the two NATO languages, both written and spoken, is essential and some knowledge of the other is desirable. NOTE: Most of the work of the NCI Agency is conducted in the English language.
