The European Association of the Machine Tool Industries and related Manufacturing Technologies (CECIMO) is looking for a new staff member to join its Brussels-based team.

About the Association

The European Association of the Machine Tool Industries and Related Manufacturing Technologies (CECIMO) is looking for a new staff member to join its dynamic team based in Brussels. Founded in 1950, CECIMO represents worldwide the common interests and values of the European manufacturers of this key enabling technology. CECIMO is the European platform which identifies and promotes strategic initiatives to improve the global competitiveness and leadership of the European Advanced Manufacturing Industry.

CECIMO is specialised in EU regulatory and policy issues, mainly in the field of industrial policy, circular economy, research & innovation, skills and education. CECIMO is daily dealing with issues related to Smart Manufacturing, Factory of the Future, Internet of Things, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, CyberSecurity and 3D printing or Additive Manufacturing.

About the role

Statistics & Market reporting

  • Update and develop the quarterly CECIMO Statistical Toolbox, a set of macroeconomic indicators that are strongly correlated with the machine tool business cycles;
  • Set up and continuously improve European-wide and world-wide statistics for the sector. Aggregate large datasets from various sources (national associations, statistics offices, World Bank, Eurostat etc.) and analysis with an eye for mistakes and inconsistencies;
  • Research on various topics on demand, mostly regarding the machine tool market, additive manufacturing market, trade etc. Also, support member associations for specific market surveys (emerging markets and/or new industrial segments);
  • Occasional revision of European and international nomenclatures for the sector, i.e. work in tight collaboration with European Commission officials (Eurostat, DG TAXUD) on various classification codes;
  • Organization of international economic and statistical meetings with CECIMO national statisticians.

Monitoring and trade policy analysis

  • Monitor EU dossiers and analysis of their possible impacts on the European machine tool industry, while regularly keep contacts with EU officials on topical dossiers;
  • Assess the impact of certain trade deals (tariff and non-tariff barriers) on our sector and provide EU officials with relevant information, when a trade agreement of interest is negotiated;
  • Assess the effects of relevant geopolitical decisions on our sector and communicate them to our members;
  • Translate policy analyses into practical recommendations for the sector.

EU Advocacy & Events

  • Meet and work with other sectorial associations in Brussels on topics of interest;
  • Provide content on economics and trade to the communication team, while also contribute to CECIMO main events;
  • Prepare briefing notes, speeches and presentations for the President, the Director General and the Board members. Write position papers and responses to the public consultations;
  • Give presentations to the Board and the General Assembly, as well as at external events for different stakeholders.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • University degree preferably in Economics and/or Political Science with a specialisation in European studies or equivalent work experience;
  • Good understanding of European policies (especially trade, internal market, economic and monetary policy) and EU decision-making processes, while having interest in new technologies and business models, advanced manufacturing industry and issues like digitisation;
  • Understanding of economic sanctions and embargo regimes;
  • Familiarity with global supply chains and the interactions within the industrial sector;
  • Comfortable with producing and interpreting statistics and indicators into strategic and economic messages;
  • Ability to organize your work around the availability of certain sectorial data and macroeconomic indicators;
  • Ability to create complex graphs in a clear and aesthetic way and interpret them. Proficiency with Excel, Access, PowerPoint. Familiarity with infographics is a lus;
  • Ability to write clear and straightforward economic reports, articles (CECIMO magazine, CECIMO Economic and Statistical Toolbox) and position papers;
  • Analytical and organizational skills, autonomy and tasks’ prioritization;
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills (written and oral);
  • Ability to explain difficult economic concepts and interact with audiences that have various understanding of the topic;
  • English is the working language; any other European language is a strong asset.
