Language: English (UK)
Organisation data: External Relations
Job number: EBI01476
Contract Type: Staff Member
Job Function: Administrative Officer (gr. 4-6)
Closing Date: 13 August 2019
The European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) is looking for a Communications Officer to join its External Relations Team and help raise the profile of the institute.
Our small team works closely with leadership, staff across the wider EMBL and international collaborators to deliver high-quality, engaging content about our data resources and bioinformatics research through a variety of digital and traditional communications channels.
Your main role will be to create and edit content for many different platforms, and to build constructive relationships with journalists.
We are looking for a sociable person with strong writing skills who is comfortable working in a digital environment. Your love of writing, outgoing personality and natural ability to connect with scientists, engineers, developers and media professionals will be invaluable in communicating complex science to the public and funders.
Crucially, your flexibility will help you adapt to shifting priorities in a busy office, where no two days are alike. Because we are a small team, you will have the opportunity to get involved in a broad range of projects covering communications, branding, events and public engagement. You will need to be flexible to travel internationally from time to time to work on events. In addition, you should be able to work independently, seeing projects through from inception to completion in a planned, open and transparent manner.
A demonstrated curiosity about and enthusiasm for science and technology. We are looking for a person who can bring hard-earned experience to this role.
Alongside strong writing and editing skills, you should also have a good understanding of digital communications channels and tools.
It will be an advantage to have an outgoing personality and be confident when engaging with experts and leadership. We hope you will also be well-organised, a self-starter with excellent time-management skills and ability to prioritise.
The ideal candidate will be educated to degree level and have experience with media distribution and monitoring tools.
Experience working internationally would also be desirable, though not required.
