We’re looking for an International Public Affairs Manager to join the McDonald’s Global Policy and Engagement (GPE) team. As the global leader in the food service industry, we are focused on modernizing our experiences and building a better McDonald’s. The Global Policy and Engagement team plays a critical role in informing and influencing the direction of corporate policies.

This role will appeal to applicants who are excited about contributing to the company’s dynamic growth and using their skills to influence corporate approaches to important issues, specifically around responsible marketing and data ethics. The Manager will work within the International Public Affairs team leadership to identify, prioritize and manage reputational or regulatory issues, serve as a thought partner for other functions, and work with markets to manage policy and reputational issues.

The Manager will deliver against strategies to deepen relationships with international stakeholders on priority issues, improve brand trust and create new opportunities for external partnerships. Working with the broader Corporate Relations function, the position will also manage the public affairs components of global announcements and external engagement campaigns.

The Manager will work with a team of public affairs colleagues to anticipate, analyse and manage issues and support strategic engagement on regulatory and reputational developments that impact business priorities globally. An important aspect of the work is collaborating with a variety of functions, in multiple locations, including corporate headquarters, regional offices, and markets around the world.

The position is based in McDonald’s Brussel’s office and reports to the Director of International Public Affairs based in Washington, DC.

Principle Accountabilities

In addition to following McDonald’s policies and procedures, accountabilities include, but are not limited to:

Supporting External Engagement

  • Informing, developing and executing externally-facing public affairs strategies in collaboration with other GPE colleagues, including:
    • Identifying, monitoring and managing policy and reputational risks and opportunities that are relevant to business priorities;
    • Understanding the evolving stakeholder environment, helping to develop engagement strategies and managing global stakeholder relationships – including organizations within the United Nations system, international non-governmental organizations, policy makers, think tanks, and other global opinion influencers;
    • Maximizing the company’s participation in trade associations.

Internal Influencing

  • Helping internal teams to understand the evolving stakeholder and policy environment and the business implications of these developments;
  • Working with the relevant cross-functional colleagues and teams to inform the direction of corporate activities related to nutrition and responsible marketing.

Market Support

  • Providing strategic counsel, technical assistance and capacity-building support to markets on key business issues related to nutrition and responsible marketing.

Issues Monitoring and Analysis

  • Serving as the team’s subject matter expert on issues related to marketing to children, responsible marketing practices and data privacy.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated their ability to:

  • Drive business decisions and strategies through public affairs:
    • Act as a thought partner to other functions. Leverage knowledge of external environment to give recommendations to cross-functional partners and markets on issues to inform and influence business decisions and strategies;
    • Analyse business proposals, policy development and engagement plans for risks and opportunities;
    • Translate and communicate reputational and regulatory developments into business opportunities;
    • Guide and prepare globally dispersed teams for significant business announcements.
  • Support and coordinate market level engagement:
    • Develop global narrative frameworks, toolkits or engagement strategies that can be tailored to market needs;
    • Analyse the relevance of local issues from a global perspective;
    • Provide intelligence and guidance to the markets to enhance capabilities and increase our capacity to proactively manage our stakeholder and issues landscape.
  • Bring an international mind-set to a globally dispersed team:
    • The ability to collaborate across business functions to deliver reputational objectives for the business;
    • Flexibility to work with colleagues and business partners across multiple time zones.

Experience and qualifications

To accomplish the above, it is important that the successful candidate has 5+ years of related experience in Public Affairs/Government Relations/Public Policy/Corporate Affairs or related communications field and a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field.

The International Public Affairs is seeking the following experience/qualifications:

  • Experience working on issues related to nutrition, public health/obesity, responsible marketing, transparency and or data privacy;
  • Project management and ability to influence in a complex environment;
  • Experience working with or at a leading international consumer brand;
  • Familiarity with the food, beverage and/or restaurant sector;
  • Experience working with national and international advocacy on private sector concerns;
  • Strong business acumen;
  • Comprehensive understanding of global stakeholders including international NGOs and the United Nations;
  • English fluency with proficiency in other languages a plus.
