We are looking for a Loan Officer to contribute to meeting the objectives of the ESM Lending team: structuring, implementing, and monitoring the financial assistance instruments provided to our beneficiaries. The Lending team is part of the ESM’s ALM & Lending division and the selected person will report to the Head of ALM and Lending. S/he will work closely with the Principal responsible for Lending and other colleagues in the Lending team, as well as in other divisions within the ESM.

The European Stability Mechanism (“ESM”) is the permanent crisis resolution mechanism for the countries of the euro area. It has launched five financial assistance programmes, provided financial support, monitored repayment capacity and engaged with partner institutions in the design of programmes in particular in areas of financial interest. The ESM has just received an expanded mandate from the European Leaders, which it will implement in the months and years ahead. The ESM will have a stronger role in the analysis of financial stability risks and design of policy measures in programmes jointly with the European Commission.

The ESM is a unique place to work, with around 180 individuals committed to making a difference to the future of the euro area. It recruits talented professionals of any nationality, from both the private and public sector.


  • Represent Lending in any workstream related to financial assistance and provide relevant expert view to internal and external stakeholders;
  • Help in the structuring of new loans, if a new financial assistance programme is agreed, including by:
    • Assisting in creating the high-level structure of the loan;
    • Managing disbursement processes;
    • Helping to prepare all financial assistance-related documentation.
  • Support the life of the loans, including managing loan events such as waivers or amendments, and monitoring EFSF/ESM contractual rights vis-a-vis loan beneficiaries;
  • Assist, as needed, in restructuring existing loans;
  • Use/build debt financial models to structure new loans and analyse possible amendments to existing loans;
  • Support beneficiary Member States’ Debt Management Offices in the implementation of financial assistance;
  • Maintain the internal loan database, participate in the team’s booking, monitoring, and reporting tasks and contribute, with Middle Office, to the administration of the loans.


  • University degree in finance/economics/law or a business-related discipline;
  • Around five years of experience in lending transactions/operations in the banking, financial, or development sector;
  • Good knowledge of loan documentation and the purpose and use of loan terms and covenants;
  • Good knowledge of Excel and financial modelling techniques and the ability to develop financial models for lending required. Ease with analytics and data management would be an asset;
  • Proper understanding of quantitative financial analysis, credit risk monitoring, and assessment;
  • Knowledge of processes and procedures related to the administration, control, and monitoring of lending operations would be an asset;
  • Understanding of the European Union framework and the European banking union elements as well as experience in managing and/or risk monitoring of sovereign or long-term lending in an International Financial Institution would be an asset;
  • Knowledge of funding instruments and techniques used in the context of sovereign debt management would be an asset;
  • Excellent drafting and oral communication skills in English.

Contract duration: 2-year fixed term contract, with possibility of extension.
