We are looking for Banking Experts to analyse developments in the euro area banking sector and banks, support monitoring of ESM/EFSF beneficiary euro area member states under the ESM’s Early Warning System framework (ESM Treaty, Article 13.6), help develop knowledge and advise on the impact of regulatory and policy developments affecting the banking sector in the euro area. The successful candidate will also participate in team projects aimed at strengthening and developing the current analytical tools of the Banking division. The selected person will report to the Head of Banking.

The European Stability Mechanism (“ESM”) is the crisis resolution mechanism for euro area countries. It provides financial assistance to Members facing financing problems, and issues debt instruments to fund this financial support.

The ESM is a unique place to work with around 180 individuals committed to making a difference to the future of the euro area. It recruits talented professionals from every nationality from both the private and public sector.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Analyse the business profile of banks to identify factors affecting their future profitability, solvency and valuation;
  • Identify factors affecting banking sectors in specific countries and in the euro area as a whole, and support related simulation analyses and stress testing;
  • Provide technical and analytical assistance in the design and implementation of banking sector policies in programme countries;
  • Analyse the recent regulatory and policy developments and advise on their impact on the banking sector and single banks;
  • Support the country teams in performing post-programme surveillance;
  • Conduct research on bank restructuring and resolution, non-performing loan (NPL) management and corporate recovery;
  • Understand and analyse top-down and bottom-up banking stress tests;
  • Support the preparation of banking sector policy notes for ESM governing bodies’ meetings;
  • Contribute to the implementation of the framework related to the common backstop of the Single Resolution Fund.

KEY BACKGROUND & EXPERIENCE

  • Advanced university degree, preferably with a specialisation in banking and finance;
  • Two-three years of relevant experience in banking and finance;
  • Very good understanding of bank analysis, the banking industry, and its trends;
  • Good understanding of banking regulation and EU institutional architecture;
  • Experience within international financial institutions or other international organisations as well as in private sector would be an asset;
  • Fluency in English required; additional languages would be an asset.

Contract duration: 2-year fixed term contract
