EUMETSAT is Europe’s meteorological satellite agency. Its role is to establish and operate meteorological satellites to monitor the weather and climate from space - 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This information is supplied to the National Meteorological Services of the organisation's Member and Cooperating States in Europe, as well as other users worldwide.

EUMETSAT also operates several Copernicus missions on behalf of the European Union and provides data services to the Copernicus marine and atmospheric services and their users.

As an intergovernmental European Organisation, EUMETSAT has 30 Member States (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and the United Kingdom).

EUMETSAT is now inviting well qualified candidates from its Member States to apply for the post of Director-General. The post will become vacant as of January 2021 when the current Director-General will retire from EUMETSAT.

DURATION OF INITIAL CONTRACT: 5 years

DUTIES:

The Director-General is the Chief Executive Officer and legal representative of the organisation, reporting to a Council comprising delegates from the 30 Member States.

The Director-General proposes and implements the strategy of the organisation, including co-operation with other organisations, including the European Union.

The Director-General is responsible for the definition of the EUMETSAT programmes proposed to the Council and for the execution of approved programmes by a multi-national team of managers, engineers, scientists and administrative staff.

This includes the definition of requirements, the procurement of satellites (through ESA), launch services and ground systems, their integration into end-to-end satellite systems delivering real time data services, as well as operation of these systems in support of operational meteorology and climate monitoring.

This involves complex negotiations with programme partners, in particular the European Space Agency and the European Commission, and Industry.

These objectives are pursued with a total personnel complement of 600, within annual budgets in the range of 600 M€ in the current peak of activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates will be senior managers with a proven track record within a major organisation having an operational emphasis in the field of meteorology, climate or environmental monitoring. They should have extensive knowledge of the use of satellites in these areas and must have relevant international negotiating experience with a global perspective. They must be capable of working and communicating effectively with external contacts at all levels from Ministers and Chief Executives to below. Additionally, they must have the drive and the leadership skills to manage a staff of lively intelligent European professionals, while being able to meet objectives within stringent financial and legal constraints.

Applicants must be nationals of one of the EUMETSAT Member States and need to be fluent in one of the official languages of the Organisation (English and French), with at least a working knowledge of the other.
