Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)

The British Embassy in Luxembourg is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is currently looking to recruit a full-time, permanent Political, Press and Events Support Officer.

Main purpose of job:

  • Press and Political: Preparing daily press summaries and fortnightly political summaries, and attending and reporting on external events and meetings in Luxembourg;
  • Event and visit management: Supporting Embassy events and senior visits;
  • Corporate support: Embassy corporate role of Health & Safety Officer.

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a small, high-performing Embassy team at a crucial juncture in UK/EU relations. During the UK/EU Transition Period, the UK will deepen its already strong bilateral relationship with Luxembourg. A key part of this will be improving our understanding of Luxembourg’s internal political and social scene – the drivers, trends, key actors and future developments. In addition, the jobholder will support Embassy events and visits, helping ensure these run smoothly. The job would suit a motivated and dynamic individual with a strong interest in foreign policy and Luxembourg’s political scene.

Specific responsibilities are listed below. The nature of the job may change over time, depending on business need.


  • Review Luxembourg’s digital, print and radio media daily, producing daily press summaries for the Ambassador and Deputy Head of Mission (DHM), and flagging key stories of interest to them. Support the DHM in building contact with local media and Embassy digital content (e.g. Facebook posts).


  • Produce fortnightly summary of Luxembourgish political developments; attend and report on external meetings and events throughout Luxembourg; build contacts with local political figures to support outreach by the Ambassador, DHM, and the Economics and Financial Services Officer.

Events and Visits:

  • Coordinate two annual Embassy higher education events. Support other Embassy staff with preparation and management of events and high-level visits, including through responsibilities such as issuing and tracking invitations, recording spend, booking flights and hotels, and helping with running the events on the day.

Corporate support:

  • As with all Embassy staff, the jobholder will assume a corporate role to help ensure the smooth running of Embassy functions. As health and safety officer, they will ensure the Embassy’s health & safety management and intervention systems are in place. They may be required to take on further roles in line with business need.

The nature of the job will require an amount of time attending external meetings and events in Luxembourg as well as supporting Embassy events and high-level visits, all of which may occur outside regular office hours. The Embassy operates informal flexibility in its staff hours, based around business need, to compensate.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • Proficiency in English, Luxembourgish, French and German (oral and written);
  • A good understanding of Luxembourg’s domestic politics;
  • Strong interest in working in public diplomacy and communications in a multilateral environment;
  • Organisational skills, structured work style;
  • Strong familiarity with the use of digital media and Office 365 including Microsoft Teams and One Drive.

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

  • Experience in event and visit management.

Other benefits and conditions of employment

This is a full-time position on a permanent contract.

The advertised annual salary includes a 13th month salary bonus payment which is also part of the remuneration pack.

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check and security clearance.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Luxembourg are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Luxembourgish employment law.

Visa/Passport requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Luxembourg and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract. Additional requirements may become necessary after 31st December 2020.
