Who we are

As the largest provider of legal services across Whitehall, The Government Legal Department (GLD) offers a career-defining opportunity. From roads to rivers and health to human rights, our work touches on most aspects of public life, thereby providing the scope to be involved in high-profile issues that are thoroughly scrutinised by Parliament and the media – issues that will directly affect the wellbeing of the nation. With more than 2,300 employees, 1,800 being lawyers, we share a commitment to providing consistently excellent services that are value-for-money. Crucially, we believe that in order to achieve this goal, we must provide a supportive environment for our staff – one in which you will be encouraged to explore your capabilities and pursue your ambitions.

The role

The department provides client-facing legal advice on the development, design and implementation of government policies and decisions, secondary legislation and primary legislation. Our cross-cutting expert service groups provide specialist legal services, ensuring we are able to offer a high-quality joined-up facility in which every Whitehall need is addressed. We are now looking for highly capable qualified Trade Lawyers to join our supportive team in the Department for International Trade.

The Department for International Trade (DIT) Legal Advisers advise the Trade Policy Group, which has been established to deliver an independent trade policy for the UK as we leave the European Union. In this team, you could provide legal support on issues such as export control, the UK’s trade policy position, trade disputes, market access, intellectual property and sustainability. You could also advise on the future legislation required to support independent trade policy.

About You

Regardless of what stage you are at in your legal career, we would be delighted to receive your application if you are an ambitious self-starter with a level of experience relevant to the role that you are applying for. As you may be required to travel abroad to support international trade negotiations, we will expect you to be a collaborative team-player, with a willingness to support colleagues in cross-departmental challenges. With excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, you will have the capacity to explain complex legal issues to a variety of audiences. You will also enjoy maintaining your professional knowledge, and will embrace the myriad of training and development opportunities that we can present you with.
