The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), based in Parma, Italy is looking for a Junior Scientific Officer - Molecular Biology (Contract Agent, Function Group IV)

Are you a motivated and enthusiastic scientist with experience in the field of molecular biology related to GM plants? Do you have experience in the areas related to molecular characterisation of GM plants such as genome modification techniques, genome sequence analysis, bioinformatics, or protein biochemistry?

Are you passionate and motivated to ensure the safety of food in Europe?

We are looking for highly motivated scientists with experience in areas related to risk assessment of GM plants, who will contribute to EFSA’s scientific and technical outputs through the collection, analysis and evaluation of data and information.

Your key responsibilities

The successful candidate will work under the responsibility of the Head of Unit or Team Leader and will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Analyse and evaluate data for preparing working documents related mainly to the scientific assessment of GM plant applications, in particular the molecular characterisation of GM plants;
  • Contribute to drafting scientific outputs through the provision of evidence-based risk assessment, mainly related to the molecular characterisation of GM plants;
  • Keep abreast of scientific and regulatory developments and contribute to providing information on legislative, policy and scientific aspects in the field of genetically modified organisms;
  • Provide administrative and scientific support to the activities of EFSA’s Panels and their Working Groups in the relevant area (e.g. preparation of working documents, scientific opinions, etc.);
  • Contribute to data collection and collation aimed at preparing scientific materials;
  • Contribute to the development of guidance and methodology documents;
  • Communicate and present scientific outputs by conveying the right messages and by making scientific concepts understandable to the public.

Salary and benefits

EFSA can offer the selected candidate a contract of 5 years with the possibility of renewal.

The successful candidate will be recruited as Contract Agent Function Group IV with the basic salary starting from € 3.531 monthly, subject to an annual review of remuneration provided for in Article 65(1) of the Staff Regulations.

In addition to the basic salary, EFSA offers a range of benefits:

  • Various allowances to which the successful jobholder may be entitled, such as a household allowance, expatriation allowance (16% of basic salary), dependent child allowance and education allowance. The salary is subject to a Community tax deducted at source and staff members are exempt from national taxation;

WHAT ARE THE SELECTION REQUIREMENTS?

You must satisfy the following requirements on the closing date for submission of your application:

I. Eligibility criteria

1. General requirements

  • Be national of a Member State of the European Union, Iceland or Norway;
  • Enjoy full rights as a citizen;
  • Have fulfilled any obligations imposed by laws concerning military service;
  • Be physically fit to perform the duties linked to the post;[1]
  • Have a thorough knowledge of one of the EU official languages and a satisfactory knowledge of another EU language;
  • Meet the character requirements for the duties involved.

2. Qualifications

A level of education which corresponds to completed university studies of at least three (3) years attested by a diploma.[2]

In case you do not fulfil all the eligibility criteria, your application will not be taken into consideration.

II. Selection criteria

The following competencies will be assessed throughout the different phases of the selection procedure. Candidates are also expected to demonstrate effective communication in both spoken and written English as well as strong motivation for the position.

1. Technical competencies

  1. At least 1 year of professional experience in the area of molecular biology and/or protein biochemistry, using tools and techniques such as genetic modification of plants including transgenesis and genome editing techniques, next generation DNA/RNA sequencing, bioinformatics, gene and protein expression, functional and structural characterisation of proteins;
  2. Experience in generating, collecting and collating data, using relevant methodologies and ability to understand and interpret reports in order to compile the evidence;
  3. Experience in drafting clear, concise and structured scientific reports, opinions and guidance documents using the appropriate scientific terminology;
  4. Experience in performing scientific risk assessment, preferably related to GM plants: ability to identify the methodologies to be used for the appraisal, extraction and analysis of evidence; integrate and weigh the evidence to draw conclusions with their related assumptions and uncertainties;
  5. Experience in communicating scientific outputs to different target audiences, conveying technical scientific concepts to internal and external stakeholders (both orally and in writing) and make them understandable to the target audience;
  6. Experience in managing scientific projects, ensuring on-time delivery of project outputs;
  7. Communication and English: strong ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both spoken and written English.
