Salary range: £27,000 - £35,000 (dependent upon experience and location, but please note there can be no negotiation outside of this range).
Position overview:
The Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF), Oceana, The Pew Charitable Trusts, The Nature Conservancy and WWF have formed the EU IUU Coalition working together to ensure that the EU maintains and improves its policies to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Since 2014, the coalition has been working to improve both the EU's own anti-IUU fishing systems and policies and to promote some of the EU’s best practices on ocean governance and fisheries transparency in other regions such as East Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Using the EU’s influence as a major flag and market State, we are helping the EU to drive policy change at the global level, prioritising increasing transparency in the fisheries sector as a means to improve global fisheries governance. To achieve this, we are working with the EU as it implements its zero-tolerance commitment against IUU fishing and to improve ocean governance, urging EU agencies to be ambitious and ensuring that ongoing positive reforms are sustained. We are also engaging the EU, as a major global player, to work more closely with other seafood markets such as Japan and the US to harmonise policies to stop IUU fishing. To make this happen, we are engaging with key decision-makers, strengthening relationships with the seafood industry and the NGO community, engaging citizens on the topic, using media strategically and providing intelligence to the EU.
In addition, some members of the coalition also work together on the revision of the EU’s Control Regulation (one of the three key regulations implementing the EU’s Common Fisheries Policy). Drawing from the successful revision of the EU external fleet Regulation in 2016/2017, the coalition aims to ensure that the revised Control Regulation reflects best practices with respect to monitoring, control and surveillance, sanctioning and traceability and, ultimately, sustainability and conservation.
To support the delivery of these objectives, the coalition is seeking a full-time Project Coordinator who will be responsible for the successful management of the project and support relevant research. The individual we seek will have excellent management skills capable of organising and working with a dispersed and diverse multinational team. Good negotiation skills and team building traits are a must as is experience in working within coalitions. Research, proofreading and writing skills to support the work where needed are also required. Good communications skills, initiative and drive are important.
Key responsibilities:
- Overall responsibility for the successful coordination of the project in line with the coalition work plan and activities: organising calls and meetings, drafting agendas and meeting notes, keeping track of agreed activities and deadlines;
- Responsible for the management of the project: ensuring good development of agreed work plans and activities in line with project description, keeping track of budget and expenses (with the support of EJF’s finance team), providing project partners/donors with regular updates on project progress, as needed, coordinating the reporting exercises for the two grants that fund the Coalition;
- Responsible for specific research tasks to further campaign objectives (as required);
- Support work on activities as required (stakeholders mail-outs, organising events, communications support and managing posts on iuuwatch.eu).
Essential skills and attributes:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional qualification;
- A minimum of 3 years of relevant professional experience required (e.g. project management, leading multi-stakeholder coalitions);
- Strong analytical and strategic skills. Ability to synthesise large amounts of information and to focus quickly on the essence of an issue/problem and identify the means to address it. A strong commitment to producing measurable results;
- Excellent written and oral communications skills in English, including briefly summarising the essence of issues. Clear, effective writing style and experience with editing documents;
- A task-oriented style, with focus on achieving clear and ambitious goals. Ability to meet multiple deadlines by maintaining a high level of organisation. Able to develop and move projects forward with a high degree of collaboration and specific constraints;
- Strong interpersonal skills; able to develop and manage productive relationships with consultants, partners and others who contribute to the development of a project by anticipating possible outcomes. Excellent listening skills. Highly articulate;
- Seasoned judgment, able to justify recommendations, and be responsive, clear and firm with colleagues and partners.
Desirable skills:
- Experience in relation to EU fisheries policy and/or knowledge of EU decision processes;
- Demonstrable interest in environmental protection;
- Knowledge of other EU languages.
