EU Affairs Manager

Neste Belgium

Brussels, Belgium

While the EU is preparing to revamp most of the legislative framework for energy and environment policies through the fit-for-55 package, there is no better time to join Neste, a front-runner in the production of sustainable fuels.

We are looking for an EU Affairs Manager to join our growing Public Affairs team in Brussels, and work closely with the wider PA global function.

Your part in Neste journey

In this position, you will be responsible for representing Neste's views to the European institutions, covering the wide range of Neste renewable and circular solutions, mostly in road transport, but also in aviation. You will devise and implement advocacy strategies and build alliances to advance the up-take of renewable-based solutions through legislation. Beyond our dynamic Public Affairs team, you will also work closely with Neste's business teams, R&D and Sustainability as well as external allies to enable success.

The day-to-day responsibilities will notably include:

  • Formulate advocacy strategy and carry out advocacy campaigns to advance Neste’s renewable products solutions at EU level. Key legislative files of relevance for this role include the Renewable Energy Directive, the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Directive, the LDV & HDV CO2 Regulations, the Energy Taxation Directive, and the ReFuel Aviation Regulation;
  • Recognize and handle emerging regulatory issues or opportunities and translate regulatory information into business insights;
  • Closely monitor any new policy development that may be of relevance to Neste, and swiftly inform the relevant team members;
  • Persuade political stakeholders, support and expand networks, and represent Neste in policy events, meetings with EU policy makers, and other stakeholder fora;
  • Ensure that Neste is firmly embedded in the EU stakeholder landscape, recognized as a trusted advisor and thought leader in renewable and circular solutions.

You will report to the Head of EU Affairs & General Manager of Neste Belgium, who is based in Brussels.

Keys to success in this role

The successful candidate will need to display a good mix of the following experiences, skills and personality traits:

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in EU affairs, including experience within an EU institution or any organisation aiming to influence policy-making. A prior working experience in a key sector such as the automotive industry or road transport users and/or operators would be a plus;
  • Degree e.g. in political science, law or communications;
  • Direct knowledge and practice of the wider spectrum of Public Affairs disciplines: issues management, advocacy coalition building, campaigning, political intelligence;
  • Thorough understanding of EU and/or national environmental, energy, transport and climate change policy and the related political systems and stakeholder landscapes; ability to translate policy developments into business insights and opportunities;
  • Ability to handle a growing number of increasingly complex policy issues;
  • Initiative, driving change and tolerant to ambiguity, excellent networking (external and internal), negotiation, communications and interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication in English, and ideally at least one other EU official language;
  • Rock-solid team spirit and a healthy dose of humor.

We offer you

  • A chance to make a real impact by working for the 4th most sustainable company in the world (Global100 ranking 2020);
  • An exciting role aiming to enable the market for renewable, waste-based and circular solutions;
  • A great team of colleagues in our global Public Affairs team & full support of the Neste organisation.
