About the team/job

EMBL is Europe's flagship life sciences institution. An intergovernmental organisation of 27 member states, EMBL operates sites in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom, and provides life science training and service programmes globally.

We're looking for an experienced editor and science writer to assist in the production of high-quality corporate communications content to explain, promote, and advocate the work of EMBL. In this role you will work closely with a team of writers and communicators to inform and engage EMBL's key audiences.

The position would be ideal for a mid-level science writer/editor looking to progress their career at an international level. The position does not involve academic editing, and our working language is English.

The Communications Editor is a newly created position within the EMBL Communications team. The postholder will ensure published communications material:

  • Is accurate, compelling, and consistent;
  • Appropriately reflects EMBL's five missions;
  • Is consistent with EMBL's culture, voice, tone, and style.

Your role

The postholder will:

  • Serve as primary editor for EMBL organisational publications, including writing, editing, and editorial oversight;
  • Provide copy-editing support and editorial guidance to the wider Communications team;
  • Carry out background research and conduct interviews with scientists, other EMBL staff members, and alumni;
  • Write content for a variety of channels, including the EMBL website, EMBL publications such as magazine, and social media;
  • Edit and subedit content produced by other staff members, ensuring that it meets EMBL guidelines for voice, tone, and style;
  • Manage content online;
  • Repackage content for specific channels and audiences;
  • Take an active role in the development of new content.

You have

To be considered for this role you must be a communications professional with an open attitude, the drive to deliver projects, and excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

The essential criteria are:

  • A bachelor's or higher qualification in a relevant scientific or communications discipline;
  • At least three years' experience in a science communications editorial role, preferably in either a life sciences research institute or an intergovernmental research organisation;
  • An impressive portfolio of written material, including feature articles;
  • An excellent command of spoken and written English;
  • Demonstrable expertise in developing and managing strong and effective internal relationships with a range of specialist internal stakeholders, including senior management;
  • Self-motivation with a proven ability to effectively collaborate and deliver projects;
  • A high level of accuracy and attention to detail;
  • The role may involve occasional travel to other EMBL sites.

You might also have

Knowledge of other languages, particularly German, French, Italian, or Spanish.
