MedTech Europe, the European trade association representing the medical technology industries, is looking for a Senior Manager Communications (Head of Communications). The ideal candidate will be a well-rounded communicator and motivating leader passionate about leading an organisation to communicate effectively around healthcare and medical technology.

The Head of Communications will establish and lead the organisation’s communication objectives in line with the vision and goals of the association and the medical technology sector. He/she will set out the communications strategy, ensuring that all communications initiatives and channels, including media, campaigns, digital channels, blogs, event communications, policy documents and other content materials, create a strong impact in achieving the organisation’s vision and goals.

He/she will lead a highly motivated communications team and report to the Director General External Affairs. He/she will also closely work together with the Director General External Affairs and the Head of Government Affairs and Public Policy to jointly shape the External Affairs Function in the organisation. Finally, he/she will collaborate and build a strong partnership with the different technical and policy leads in the organisation to bring high quality and effective communication strategies for one of the top trade associations in Brussels.

The Role

1) Strategic Communications:

  • Lead the strategic direction of MedTech Europe’s communications function, including but not limited to media relations, digital strategy, Europe-wide communication campaigns, crisis communication and other internal and external communications activities;
  • Develop, and implement all phases of MedTech Europe’s communication strategy in accordance with organisational plans/objectives, devise crisis communications plans, and advise MedTech Europe’s leadership on communications activities;
  • Take the lead and suggest opportunities for new projects, advising, collaborating and working alongside internal stakeholders/experts and other partners to implement communications campaigns and projects.

2) Communications Team Lead:

  • Be a leader of MedTech Europe’s communications team, sustaining a positive internal atmosphere/dynamic paired with constructive individual coaching and performance measurement;
  • Collaborate with the DG External Affairs and Head of GAPP in managing the External Affairs department, including in administering the EA team’s budget;
  • Steer the Communications Team into a strategic direction, keeping in mind long- and short-term objectives;
  • Manage and report on communication engagement metrics & project learnings;
  • Represent the association as communications lead in internal/external meetings and events.

The Experience

  • At least 8 years of solid work experience in EU-focused, strategic communications (with experience within the health/medtech sectors being a strong asset);
  • Strong knowledge of the major EU institutions;
  • Excellent managerial skills;
  • Excellent writing/proofreading/editing skills;
  • Strong track record/experience in media relations, esp. working with EU and trade press is desirable;
  • Experience in leading crisis communication strategies;
  • Good knowledge of different communication tools.

  • Coordination and project management skills;
  • Confidence in driving conversation/initiatives with members and stakeholders;
  • Ability to communicate clearly and translate complex information into clear messages;
  • Ability to prioritise tasks and work autonomously, when required.
