Transport & Environment (T&E) is seeking a highly motivated and proactive market analyst in the area of batteries and upstream supply chains.

The role will focus on analysing and mapping battery metals and other vehicle supply chains, and using this analysis to shape policies to make the supply chain more sustainable and responsible.

This is a role based in T&E’s vehicles team in Brussels.

Our vision is a zero-emission mobility system that is affordable and has minimal impacts on our health, climate and environment. Our staff in Brussels, Rome, Berlin, Paris, Madrid, Warsaw and London collaborate with our over 60 member and supporter groups to clean up the transport sector.

T&E has shaped some of Europe’s most important environmental laws. T&E got the EU to set the world’s most ambitious CO2 standards for cars and trucks, helped uncover the Dieselgate scandal and helped create the world’s first sustainable battery law – just to name a few.

Who are we looking for?

The position requires a person who can go from grasping the technical and economic issues related to raw material extraction, refining and supply chains and do the necessary research, to translating this information into reports and other communication materials to diverse audiences and use for doing advocacy work.

The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to grasp technical and economic issues related to raw materials extraction, refining and upstream vehicle supply chains, to analyse different policy scenarios and model future trends, and to translate them into simple and persuasive messages.

We offer the chance to help shape policies with huge implications for people and the environment in Europe. Sustainable and responsible supply chains is an area where a lot of new policy and developments are expected in the coming years, so the candidate will have a chance to influence one of the key future areas in climate politics. The role is based within the Vehicles team but will require you to collaborate with colleagues from other teams across Europe. This is a full-time position based in Brussels. A more flexible working schedule can be discussed.

Main functions of the role

  • Being T&E’s expert on upstream supply chains, including battery metals (lithium, nickel, etc.), other materials such as steel and aluminum, mining and refining processes and their environmental impacts, mapping supply & demand, international standards, etc.;
  • Translating the market analysis into communication materials towards different audiences;
  • Analysing and dissecting market trends, data and forecasts from a variety of sources including company reports and ESG standards, scientifics papers and specialised literature, market forecasts and geological surveys; and using these to develop a detailed understanding of T&E of the impacts and trends in vehicle supply chains;
  • Representing T&E in expert groups (e.g. in the Global Battery Alliance) and conferences to shape European regulations on supply chains, advising colleagues to shape T&E policy priorities and programme goals in the area of battery and vehicles supply chains.

The successful candidate should meet all of the following criteria

  • Proven professional experience and knowledge of upstream (metals mining & refining) supplier industries, markets, economics and technology;
  • Have strong analytical skills, an ability to quickly grasp technical issues, assess data, and good knowledge of Excel or other modeling tools;
  • Strong writing proficiency with proven experience and ability to write compelling analytical reports for external publication in fluent, concise and accurate English with little supervision;
  • Relevant professional experience working on technical issues in the environmental or broader ESG sectors, or in a research institution, is highly recommended but we’ll make exceptions for very talented starters;
  • Project management experience including strong interpersonal and team-working skills and an ability to deliver to tight deadlines;
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills and an ability to work in English fluently. Other European languages are considered a bonus;
  • The confidence to think and act with initiative, to engage and influence policymakers of different stripes, collaborate with industry representatives, NGO networks and other stakeholders;
  • A personal commitment to climate, sustainable transport and the aims of T&E.
