Purpose of the role

On behalf of our pan-European and global membership, AFME aims to provide industry insights and expertise from our membership to policy makers and the regulatory and supervisory community for financial services. Our objective is to promote a clear understanding of how financial markets can meet the needs of the economy. We support deep and integrated European capital markets which serve companies and investors and benefit society. AFME is part of an international alliance of leading trade associations brought together under the Global Financial Markets Association which addresses the global regulatory agenda.

We are seeking to fill a vacancy in our Advocacy Division. The Division is responsible for ensuring that AFME messages on proposed policy initiatives are delivered to official sector stakeholders in the EU & UK in an appropriate, effective and coherent manner, taking the wider political agenda into account.

Based in Brussels, the successful candidate will play a key role in AFME’s work on the prudential and resolution frameworks in both the EU & UK and will provide the secretariat to AFME’s European Public Policy Committee.

Working with member firms and AFME's policy experts, the post holder will help shape and convey our messages to participants in the European policy-making process. The role is at the heart of AFME’s activities, analysing and influencing current and future European legislative, regulatory and public policy issues.


  • Play a central role in the design and implementation of AFME’s advocacy strategy and engagement with key officials in the EU and in the UK in the areas of his/her portfolio, under the guidance of the Deputy Head of Advocacy;
  • Working together with policy teams and members, establish clear advocacy objectives, develop and deliver tailored, contextualised positions as well as supporting analysis to relevant official sector interlocutors and private sector partners, ensuring that decision makers are aware of our members’ priorities;
  • Develop other advocacy material and activities as required (e.g. educational material, conferences, webinars, articles, etc.), working closely with comms and events teams where relevant to deploy our positions;
  • Ensure members and colleagues are kept abreast of relevant policy and legislative developments and their strategic implications; contribute to briefings for senior management and others as required;
  • Initial areas of focus will include key areas of banking regulation such as the EU and UK implementation of Basel standards; crisis management/resolution; EU Banking Union developments; macroprudential policy; development of new global prudential standards (e.g. crypto, ESG);
  • To assist in the identification of advocacy priorities and development of our advocacy strategies in these areas, manage a subgroup of the European Public Policy Committee dedicated to prudential regulation. This will include preparing agenda items and background papers; steering discussions; liaising with members; ensuring effective follow up on actions, etc.;
  • Depending on the evolution of the policy landscape and the organisation’s priorities, the role may also contribute to other financial services policy areas and will contribute to various other activities of the Advocacy team;
  • Be responsible for the coverage of a selected number of key interlocutors from a geographical (key Member States) and institutional (e.g. EP, EC, ESAs, etc.) perspective. This includes building and maintaining a network of appropriate contacts, including relationships within the official sector and the broader ecosystem of relevance to financial services policy making;
  • The post holder will provide the secretariat for AFME’s European Public Policy Committee (EPPC), a senior horizontal committee within the AFME structure, comprising Heads and Senior Representatives of Public and Government Affairs within AFME Member firms.

Skills and experience

Key competencies:

  • Strong analytical and drafting skills to be able to articulate clear and convincing advocacy material;
  • Well-developed project management and organisation skills to drive work streams and keep them on track;
  • Ability to manage complex meetings/interactions with a range of stakeholders to establish and work towards agreed outputs;
  • Excellent communication skills; fluent oral and written English and additional European languages;
  • Demonstrated experience of building and maintaining relationships with a wide network of opinion formers;
  • Strong self-motivation, intellectual curiosity and high levels of energy and social engagement, including networking with members;
  • The ability to function effectively in a challenging, fast-paced and professional team environment.


  • Good understanding of the financial services regulatory landscape and familiarity with the area of prudential regulation and resolution;
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience acquired for instance within an EU/UK institution/supervisory body, financial institution, consultancy or trade association;
  • Strong knowledge of European decision-making and legislative processes.


  • Familiarity with the EU economic governance framework as well as with the broader policy agenda which impacts AFME members (e.g. green and digital transitions, capital market development and regulation, cross-border cooperation, etc.);
  • Knowledge of the roles and standard setting operations of international regulatory bodies.
