The Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities, a network of 21 of Europe’s leading universities across 16 countries, is looking to fill a position of a Communications Officer with 1-3 years of relevant experience. The postholder will join The Guild, created in 2016, at an exciting time when the network is seeking to strengthen its voice further externally (amongst policy-makers and a wider public), and internally among members through a new communications strategy. The role

Reporting to the Secretary-General, the Communications Officer (CO) will lead on maintaining and enhancing a strong public profile for The Guild. The CO will work with the entire team to ensure that the reach of The Guild’s communications is maximized – among policy-makers, in social media, and in the key media outlets relevant to the sector. In conjunction with colleagues from our universities’ communications teams, the CO will develop an effective communication strategy, and further strengthen the Guild’s brand identity in all forms. The CO will also lead on the development of effective communications with members, building excellent relationships with their Press and PR offices. The CO will develop a sophisticated understanding of media stakeholders at the national and regional levels, in order to ensure the Guild enhances the visibility of its members.

The position will involve

  • Leading The Guild’s advocacy campaigns and communications activities across different channels, and being in charge of The Guild’s social media accounts, website and members’ intranet;
  • Developing a communications strategy to enhance the Guild’s public profile in appropriate ways, identify targets, and deliver on them;
  • Writing content for publication, including web articles and social media updates, proofreading texts, and preparing the layouts of documents in an effective way;
  • Strengthening The Guild’s branding through visual content, such as banners, photo galleries and videos;
  • Monitoring and engaging with the communications activities of The Guild’s member universities, key policy makers, and other stakeholders, to help promote the excellence and reputation of our member universities;
  • Reporting on the outreach of The Guild communications using social media and Google analytics;
  • Participating in the planning and organisation of internal and external events;
  • Developing insight into policy areas relevant to research, innovation and education;
  • Co-ordinating working-groups (including the organization of meetings), notably the Communications Leads working group;
  • Developing close working relationships with other members of the team, supporting the senior policy team as necessary, and advising team members on how to ensure the effectiveness of our communication efforts;
  • Fulfilling other responsibilities and tasks as directed by the Secretary General and the Head of Policy.

Profile and Competencies

The successful candidate should demonstrate the following competencies:

Education & Experience

  • University degree, at Bachelor’s level or higher;
  • At least 1-3 years of professional experience in communications, experience in working with EU policies or the higher education sector is considered an asset;
  • Good understanding of the functioning of the EU institutions.

Specific Competencies

  • Excellent command of the English language, and ability to write fluently and proofread in English (knowledge of other EU languages is considered an asset);
  • Excellent understanding of social media (esp. twitter, linkedIn, youtube), website management, and brand development;
  • Good interpersonal and intercultural communication skills;
  • Good, practical working knowledge of MS Office systems (especially MS Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint). Knowledge of creative tools, e.g.: Adobe Creative Cloud;
  • Proactive and collaborative mind-set;
  • A taste for creative tasks;
  • Good analytical skills;
  • Commitment to the vision and the mission of The Guild.

Other Competencies

  • Prepared to travel and undertake additional duties as required;
  • Proactive, self-motivated and flexible, with an ability to work on multiple projects in a fast-paced environment;
  • Positive and constructive attitude in an evolving environment;
  • Ability to handle confidentiality in relation to members, and to the Guild.

The Guild offers

  • Permanent full-time position under Belgian law;
  • A European working environment located in Brussels;
  • Unless a national of the ‘EU and EEE’, candidates must be eligible to work in Belgium and must have a work permit;
  • Start date: As soon as possible.
