EMBL is Europe’s flagship laboratory for the life sciences – an intergovernmental organisation with more than 110 independent research groups and service teams covering the spectrum of molecular biology. It operates across six sites in Heidelberg (headquarters), Barcelona, Cambridge, Grenoble, Hamburg and Rome. Our mission is to perform basic research in molecular biology; train scientists, students and visitors at all levels; offer vital services to scientists in the public and private sectors within the member states; develop new instruments and methods; and engage actively in technology transfer.

Your role

The International Relations Unit is responsible for managing relations with EMBL member states and other major government and political stakeholders, the European International Research Organisations Forum (EIROforum), EMBL Partnerships, EU relations and advises the Head of International Relations on all of the above. You will be responsible for providing support to the team in the following areas:

  • organising external and internal meetings and events;
  • preparing briefings and presentations;
  • writing minutes, summaries, reports and analyses;
  • assisting with other tasks as required.

You have

This is a training position suitable for a masters-level graduate looking to gain experience in international relations in the environment of an intergovernmental organisation.

  • Writing and organisational skills, attention to detail, as well as being able to multitask and deal with people in a friendly and diplomatic manner are essential;
  • Excellent written and spoken knowledge of English and German is required. Fluency in another language is desirable;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and use of internet is required;
  • Teamwork, demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people in a multi - cultural environment are required.

This is a six-month position with the possibility for an extension of further six months on mutual agreement. The position is based at EMBL’s site in Heidelberg, Germany. The position comes with a stipend of 700 EUR and accommodation provided if needed.
