The American Academy in Berlin fosters greater understanding and dialogue between the United States and Germany. The institution is dedicated to advancing scholarship in the humanities and social sciences, and to the creation of exceptional works of literature, art, journalism, and music. The Academy offers residential fellowships in Berlin to American scholars, writers, policymakers, and artists, permitting them to pursue their work at the historic Hans Arnhold Center and participate in the vibrant life of Berlin and Germany. The Academy also brings leading Americans to Berlin for briefer visits to facilitate a robust exchange of views in a transatlantic context, presents a series of public programs, and hosts symposia on a range of timely issues. Headquartered in New York, the institution is independent, nonpartisan, and entirely privately funded.

Our Berlin office is looking for a Senior Manager, Development (Fundraising) (m/f/d) full-time with 40 hours per week starting as soon as possible.

This senior position will work closely with the Vice President of Development, based in New York, to contribute to and drive the organization’s fundraising strategy across both counties. The Senior Manager, Development (Fundraising) provides vital cross-cutting support to and oversight of the work of the Academy’s Development team to strengthen fund soliciting efforts and operational fundraising processes. The position leads a team of two staff members.

Responsibilities include:

  • Executing fundraising strategies in Germany and driving best practices for the fundraising team;
  • Contributing to strategic fundraising planning and development of fundraising campaigns and tools in close cooperation with Vice President of Development;
  • Support the Academy President on institutional fundraising goals;
  • Manage a portfolio of foundation, corporate, and individual donors and prospects;
  • Identify and cultivate prospective new donors taking into account market developments;
  • Responsibility for donation administration in Germany, including compliance and pledge management;
  • Manage donor communications, grant reports, meeting briefings, and proposals, including quality control and ensuring timelines;
  • Liaise with all other departments to facilitate strong collaboration across the institution;
  • Represent the institution and attend Academy events in a cultivation and stewardship function.

Qualifications sought:

  • University degree or comparable education in relevant field, such as fundraising, marketing, communication, business management;
  • At least seven years of relevant experience working in foundation, corporate, and/or individual giving fundraising;
  • Experience in successfully cultivating and soliciting major gifts from individuals, corporations and/or foundations, and/or managing an individual or corporate membership program;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a professional and diplomatic manner;
  • Familiarity and facility with a donor contact resource management database as well as effective use of donor data metrics and prospect research;
  • Management experience and intercultural competence;
  • Structured way of working, strong attention to detail, and high degree of self-organization and personal responsibility;
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills;
  • German and English language skills at a very high level, both written and spoken;
  • Demonstrated excellence in organizational and communication skills, working with multiple teams across an organization;
  • Broad interest in political and cultural topics combined with an affinity for transatlantic issues.
