Policy and Coalition Consultant

Opportunity Green

Brussels, Belgium

Role: part-time, fixed term for 1 year (subject to funding)
Salary: €70,000 for 1 year, paid monthly

About us

Established in 2021, Opportunity Green is a fast-growing not-for-profit organisation that helps to identify and unlock opportunities to tackle climate change. We build ambitious coalitions, support climate vulnerable countries in international negotiations and find innovative legal pathways to emissions reductions. We are now looking for a Brussels-based consultant to work in our ambitious coalitions team.

Opportunity Green founded the Skies and Seas Hydrogen-fuels Accelerator – SASHA for short – coalition as part of our ambitious coalitions workstream. We unify the aviation and shipping industries to highlight the vital role of green hydrogen and direct air capture in their decarbonisation.

What’s the role?

As an external consultant, you will report to the SASHA team and CEO and report on your deliverables each month.

We are looking for someone who also has a strong interest and proven experience in environmental and energy consulting, so you will have a keen eye for policy intervention and ability to build strong stakeholder relationships.

This is a wide-ranging and independent role for someone who wants to work in climate and is happy to turn their hand to many different tasks without supervision. Our SASHA team is looking to increase presence in Brussels, especially with policymakers, MEPs and representatives from the shipping and aviation industries. You will therefore need to be proactive, confident and have the skills to create relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders.

You will have

  • Previous experience conducting the essential/desirable tasks below;
  • Dedication to stopping climate change;
  • Deep understanding of how EU policymaking happens and experience of influencing the same for the better;
  • Willingness to turn your hand to many different tasks such as forging relationships in the Brussels institutions, holding small events and regulation/policy horizon scanning;
  • Excellent demonstratable communication skills in English, additional EU languages a plus;
  • Excellent time management, an ability to meet deadlines, logically tackle problems, set priorities and communicate on each;
  • Enough discipline to deliver excellent outcomes in a timely manner while working remotely and independently;
  • Ability to interact with people from around the world with kindness and respect;
  • Any knowledge of aviation, shipping and hydrogen sectors and their related policy landscapes is a bonus;
  • Be Brussels-based or willing to travel to Brussels frequently from elsewhere in/near Belgium.

Essential tasks

  • Identify key stakeholders within the Commission and build relationships (ideally would come with existing knowledge of relevant stakeholders);
  • Map out existing regulation and policy landscape and identify points where the SASHA Coalition could make them more ambitious;
  • Socialise the SASHA Coalition with other key stakeholders in Brussels;
  • Provide updates on European Commission/Parliament/Council activity and monitor for ad-hoc opportunities for engagement.

Desirable tasks

  • Organising any Brussels-based events (with support from Opportunity Green team), policy roundtables or coalition meetings;
  • Targeted research on a selection of national plans in select countries (for example, those with large aviation and shipping sectors) within the EU.

Diversity and inclusion

Diversity and inclusion are important principles at OG. We believe that diversity and inclusion make teams stronger and more effective. We are committed to fair and equitable employment practices and we are striving to ensure that a variety of voices and experiences are included in our organisation. Our commitment to diversity and our parental leave policy are available to view on our website, here.

We will consider all applicants who meet most or all of the essential competencies regardless of their identity or background. That said, we know that diverse candidates may be reluctant to apply for jobs where they don’t meet 100% of the criteria outlined in the job description. We encourage anyone to apply who can demonstrate the variety of skills and experiences relevant to meeting the requirements of this role.

We recognise that many diverse experiences and perspectives are not represented in our current workforce, and are seriously underrepresented across the non-profit sector in general, and as such, we particularly welcome applications from people with disabilities, people of colour, people from marginalised backgrounds, and members of the LGBTQIA+ communities. We will use positive action under the Equality Act 2010 to appoint from these groups if two candidates are equally qualified.

What we offer

  • We are offering: €70,000 pa;
  • Your work pattern is very flexible – you can work when you want as long as you provide the monthly deliverables (subject to agreed calls, etc.). We won’t be looking for hourly or daily rates, we are instead interested in the outcomes.

How to apply

Please follow the instructions by clicking the apply button.

To minimise the risk of unconscious bias, we ask that applicants remove the following from their CVs:
