Job Summary:

The role of Online Safety Commissioner is a statutory post, as set out in Section 11 of the Broadcasting Act 2009 (as amended by the Online Safety and Media Regulation Act, 2022). The Online Safety Commissioner plays a key role in the design, development and implementation of all Coimisiún na Meán’s strategies, policies and procedures.

In particular, the Online Safety Commissioner has a key role in developing and implementing Ireland’s Online Safety Framework, in conjunction with the Digital Services Commissioner.

The Online Safety Commissioner has primary responsibility for shaping policy direction, deepening understanding of online harms, and leading the evolution of the regulatory framework, including the integration of new legislative competences. They work closely with the Digital Services Commissioner who has primary responsibility for the supervision and enforcement of platform compliance and for representing Coimisiún na Meán within the EU institutional framework, including on the Board for Digital Services.

Main Duties of the Job:

Be part of the collective leadership of the organisation, supporting our growing teams, fostering our values and culture, ensuring collaboration across the organisation and taking shared responsibility for delivery across the Commission’s full mandate;
Participate in decision-making on matters reserved to the Commission and on significant regulatory, policy and governance decisions across the entire Coimisiún na Meán mandate;
In collaboration with the Digital Services Commissioner, oversee the work of Coimisiún na Meán related to the online safety framework ensuring alignment between policy, regulatory design and enforcement;
Interact with relevant Government agencies and departments, in particular the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport and support relationships with external stakeholders through collaboration regarding online safety issues, including, for example, through the Digital Regulators Group, the Global Online Safety Regulators Network and/or representing An Coimisiún in Oireachtas settings and the media.
