Researcher/Research Fellow in AI Ethics and Policy - Global Governance, Regulation, Innovation and the Digital Economy (GRID) Unit

Main tasks

  • Contribute to CEPS' work on AI ethics, governance and policy. We are currently contributing to three Horizon Europe projects, TANGO, AI CODE, and NEUROCLIMA, researching the ethical, legal and socio-economic factors that arise when theorising, developing and applying the project to ensure ethical decision making in human-machine interaction; this will include empirical research through interviews. We are also leading an ambitious research initiative to promote the European ecosystem of excellence in AI. We are co-leading (with the Brookings institution) the Forum for International Cooperation in AI (FCAI) which focuses on the prospects for global and international AI governance. Finally, our work on AI is also prominently featured in our Trade and Technology Dialogue project, which supports the EU-U.S. Trade and Technology Council and in project work for UNIDO (on AI in Ukraine);
  • Contribute to the writing of policy reports and project deliverables, as well as publications, including op-eds, policy briefs, and regular contribution to CEPS events and communications activities (including the upcoming CEPS podcast on AI and the Future of Work);
  • Carry out high-quality and high-impact research, both independently and in teams comprising CEPS and external researchers, on the topic of ethics and governance of AI, or any other topic of interest when agreed with the CEPS Research Director;
  • Assist in the preparation of research proposals;
  • Give presentations and represent CEPS at consortium project meetings.

Your background and qualifications

Compulsory

  • You have a Master’s degree in Public Policy, Economics, Political Science, Law, Philosophy, other Social Sciences, or related topics. For this position, we are also willing to consider specialisations in computer or data science, especially if coupled with a specific interest in the ethics, policy and governance aspects of AI;
  • You have significant knowledge of AI and ethics, AI policies in the EU and beyond, and related areas;
  • You have excellent English drafting and oral presentation skills;
  • You are familiar with common software suites and tools (e.g. Microsoft Office, Salesforce, GPT-4);
  • You have at least three years of demonstrable work/research experience in relevant fields.

Desirable

  • Previous research experience in digital and AI policy and/or ethics of AI;
  • A PhD;
  • Strong qualitative methods skills, for example experience with conducting interviews, and solid analytical reasoning;
  • Knowledge or research experience in (or with) EU policy and institutions;
  • Excellent knowledge of another EU official language would be an asset.
