OVERVIEW

Fairtrade is an alternative approach to conventional trade and is based on a partnership between producers and consumers. Fairtrade offers producers a better deal and improved terms of trade. This allows them the opportunity to improve their lives and plan for their future. Fairtrade offers consumers a powerful way to reduce poverty through their everyday shopping.

Fairtrade International is the international non-profit, multi stakeholder body that is responsible for the strategic direction of Fairtrade, sets Fairtrade standards and supports producers.

This is a new position in a newly created Global Impact unit to ensure that Fairtrade International makes the most of its information and knowledge management assets to deliver value and impact. The Head of Information & Knowledge provides technical and professional leadership of information and knowledge management across the Fairtrade System and ensure that effective delivery of centrally managed information and knowledge management services.

Information and knowledge management in Fairtrade International will undergo major change over the next three to five years with the implementation of a holistic data strategy aimed at embedding information and knowledge management in the business and developing the digital capability of the business to manage its information appropriately, to mitigate information risks, to collaborate and share knowledge effectively, and to maximize the value of its information assets.

PRINCIPAL ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the Global Impact Director, the Head of Information & Knowledge role will be accountable for:

  • Building the Information & Knowledge Management team within the Global Impact unit;
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of Fairtrade’s data strategy working collaboratively with relevant teams in Fairtrade International, its Members and FLOCERT;
  • Developing systems and processes to ensure an effective an integrated approach to identify, capture, evaluate, retrieve and share Fairtrade’s impact information assets, as needed to enhance efficiencies and communications in support of a one-house approach and other management initiative and processes;
  • Providing specialized advice on the development and implementation of data and information systems, particularly on data governance;
  • Developing and delivering a framework for reporting against information and knowledge objectives and targets;
  • Establishing an information and knowledge centre of excellence function and ensure that consistent and business appropriate policy, support and guidance is delivered;
  • Engaging Fairtrade with the latest thinking on information and knowledge management;
  • Facilitating a constructive dialogue and effective integration between the business and information and knowledge management staff across the organization, especially with Global Products, Programs and Policy and Pricing teams;
  • Representing information and knowledge management work in relevant forums, including the Global Data Governance Group;
  • Planning and managing the budget for information and knowledge and identify and implement a methodology for measuring the return on investment from spending on information and knowledge management;
  • Providing guidance to, and supervising a five-person Information & Knowledge team, consultants, etc.

SKILLS REQUIRED

Professional Skills and Personal Qualities:

  • Advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent) in Information Science, computer or Information Systems, International Business, Economics or related field;
  • Specialized training in data and information management is an asset;
  • Significant experience in managing information and knowledge management services in a variety of business settings;
  • 5+ years or directly related experience on data management, data governance and/or data quality;
  • Proven project management and team communication skills with demonstrated ability to effectively engage and lead individuals and teams;
  • A strong team player, with ability to communicate and influence at many levels including senior management;
  • Passion for continuous learning and seeking out knowledge;
  • Diplomatic and approachable communication style, with the ability to cultivate enthusiasm and interest in the subject manger and engage at all levels;
  • Ability to facilitate group discussions/debates;
  • Ability to be flexible in a complex and dynamic work environment;
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Service- and goal-oriented style.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

  • This is a full-time position within Fairtrade International;
  • Location is at Fairtrade International offices in Bonn, Germany;
  • The office language is English;
  • Salary is 5.391,65 as per the Collective Bargaining Agreement for the Wholesale and Foreign Trade Industries for North Rhine Westphalia and Fairtrade International Company Agreement on wages and salaries Group 6b plus an attractive benefit package;
  • 30 days of holidays per year.
