The Methanol Institute is a non-profit, global trade association for one of the world’s most vibrant and innovative industries. Founded in 1989 to help further the development of methanol fuel markets, MI now serves its members in every corner of the globe from our headquarters in Singapore, and regional offices in Washington, D.C., Beijing, Delhi, and Brussels. Methanol is chemical building block and emerging energy resource that can be produced from conventional fossil fuels as well as biomass, bio-methane, and renewable electricity along with CO2. As a low carbon and net carbon neutral fuel, methanol can be used to power cars, buses, trucks, ships, trains, industrial boilers, cook stoves, power generation and fuel cells. Bio-methanol and e-methanol can also contribute to the circular economy for producing hundreds of products that touch our daily lives.
Role
The Manager of Government & Public Affairs Europe will work in a team environment and is responsible for supporting the trade association’s Washington-based CEO and Brussels-based EU Chief Representative. You will manage a range of policy and business development activities. You will be involved in or lead multiple projects at once involving stakeholders across Europe. These may involve lobbying members of the European Parliament or Member State officials for supportive policies, working on EU-funded research and demonstration projects, or engaging with allied trade associations/NGOs to achieve common goals. This public policy professional will be based in Europe and responsible for all aspects of the Methanol Institute’s public policy strategy. The ideal candidate for this position will have engaged with public policy teams and have a passion for energy and climate leadership.
Responsibilities
- The position will focus on engagement with EU institutions, policymakers and other stakeholders in advance of and during regulatory and legislative processes to support the production and use of methanol as a low carbon and net carbon neutral fuel and chemical commodity;
- Monitoring and analyzing EU policy developments to build internal intelligence for association members concerning energy and climate issues, as well as drafting position papers and responses to public consultations;
- Recognize and handle emerging regulatory challenges and opportunities;
- Monitoring and reporting on EU policy and legislative proposals relevant to the methanol industry in one or more policy areas (energy, climate, environment, chemicals);
- Preparing briefings, documents, and presentations for a variety of purposes and audiences serving as a spokesperson for the association;
- Assisting with internal meetings, teleconferences and webinars supporting the association and its members;
- The successful candidate will help manage and deliver projects for the association across a range of areas including road and marine fuel demonstrations, and development of renewable methanol production capacity;
- Identify allies and build coalitions of like-minded groups including think tanks, public interest groups, and academia;
- Identifies strategies and technologies to engage association members in public policy input, workshops, targeted campaigns, and government relations;
- Supports association members in their own government relations efforts through advice and by opening doors with elected officials and civil servants.
Qualifications
- Candidates should have 2-5 years or more of working experience, including exposure to EU institutions, with good knowledge of the EU institutional procedures;
- Experience of engaging with EU policymakers on a range of policy issues, including developing and executing advocacy strategies;
- Strong interest in politics and institutional affairs;
- Thorough understanding of supranational and national environmental, energy, transport and climate change policy and the related political systems and stakeholder landscapes;
- Ability to translate policy developments into business insights and opportunities;
- Demonstrable experience in managing multiple projects simultaneously;
- Excellent research & data analysis skills and ability to summarize and highlight essential elements from legislative documents, sometimes of technical nature;
- Outstanding verbal and written communications stills including social media;
- Demonstrable experience of applying creative, practical, common sense thinking to solve real-world problems;
- Energetic, collaborative, and willing to take on all variety of assignments as part of a small but dynamic team;
- Ability to work independently as well as on teams with diverse personalities and skill levels;
- Excellent command of English and one other EU language written and spoken;
- Willingness to travel across Europe.
Salary
Annual €40,000-€45,000. The selected applicant to be hired as a full-time employee.
