The European Society for Radiotherapy & Oncology (ESTRO), is recruiting a Communication & Social Media Manager who will be responsible for all on-line and off-line communications for ESTRO, ensuring the messages are consistent and aligned with ESTRO Vision and Mission.

Our Society

Founded in 1980, ESTRO, the European SocieTy for Radiotherapy & Oncology (ESTRO), is a non-profit and scientific organisation that fosters the role of Radiation Oncology in order to improve patients’ care in the multimodality treatment of cancer.

With over 7 000 members in and outside Europe, ESTRO supports all the Radiation Oncology professionals in their daily practice: Radiation Oncologists, Medical Physicists, Radiobiologists and RTTs (Radiation Therapists) and the wider oncology community.

ESTRO’s mission is to promote innovation, research, and dissemination of science through its congresses, special meetings, educational courses and publications.

Your mission

You are the protector of the credibility and visual identity of ESTRO through the various Communication channels. As the Communication & Social Media Manager, you are in charge of developing the necessary communication actions and of identifying the right communication tools to engage the targeted audiences.

Key Activities


  • Advise the Senior Management Team on communication strategies, channels and tools;
  • Contribute to the development of an integrated communications strategy for ESTRO and its spin-offs;
  • Develop and maintain a strategic perspective, keeping abreast of all trends in the oncology and RO area;
  • Observe and develop a critical eye on the marketing/communication actions of the SocieTy and its partners.

People Management

  • Supervise, develop and lead the Communication Coordinator, the Marketing Project Manager and the Manager SocieTy Affairs and Research Projects (indicate what needs to be done and provide them with necessary deadlines);
  • Be accountable for the smooth running of the Marketing and Communication activities;
  • Anticipate impacts of workload/issues to team deadlines;
  • Have a very positive work attitude;
  • Communicate on and translate ESTRO Strategy into team operational activities;
  • Align with Senior Management decisions and support these towards his/her team.

Core activities

  • Develop a yearly Communication plan in line with the overall strategy for the various ESTRO activities, Units and projects (eg. ROSEIS, GIRO, HERO, Communities pavilion, courses, Membership…) depending on the audiences, in consultation with the relevant staff members;
  • Build, harmonize and maintain ESTRO branding, including ESTRO’s projects, activities and communities;
  • Ensure consistency of ESTRO brand through all communication channels (web, social media, PwP, e-mails, folders, …);
  • Optimize print, social media and initiate targeted blog campaigns to generate interaction (especially after and before an ESTRO event) and brand exposure;
  • Remain on top of how Members and other stakeholders are responding in real-time on social media, using analytics tools to measure reach, traffic and engagement, in close collaboration with the Marketing Project Manager, and react accordingly;
  • Monitor social media metrics to assess impact of conveyed messages and develop strategies for improvement;
  • Track (Social) Media coverage to gauge ESTRO presence and find new opportunities of developing the outer circle;
  • Coordinate ESTRO Newsletters in collaboration with the relevant staff members (define ESTRO info and messaging for content, prepare interviews accordingly, write and edit articles, liaise with authors, corners editors and team members to get articles);
  • Oversee the follow-up on all activities involved in the publication of ESTRO Newsletters: set up timelines, compile files, supervision of graphic design, proof reading, release of the Newsletter top targeted audience;
  • Keep abreast of local events to gauge opportunities of promoting ESTRO in close collaboration with National Societies;
  • Oversee the coordination of the different ESTRO profiles on social media (eg. FB, Twitter, ...);
  • Based on input from the Education Unit, optimize and reinforce targeted promotion of less successful courses through the relevant communication channels;
  • Revamp and supervise maintenance of ESTRO web page(s), ensure that information is accurate and convey Mission, Vision and Values in a user-friendly way;
  • Supervise activities around the publication of the yearly ESTRO Guide and the annual report;
  • Organize and manage all Press relations, ie coordinate media consultants in the selection of messages and abstracts for press, support various stakeholders (ESTRO President, authors, …) in their relations with Media and coordinate agendas, prepare and print media packs, liaise with local press officers, coordinate interviews on site, welcome journalists at annual conferences, ensure media watch, if need be, organize media training with interviewees;
  • Set up MoUs for ensuring visibility and ensure that consistent information and correct visuals are posted regularly and match with the updates of the other channels;
  • Redesign and roll-out e-library and integrate it consistently in ESTRO website;
  • Organize post-events and activities follow-up;
  • Other duties as per defined scope.

Your profile

  • You own a Master degree in Communication or Marketing. A Scientific background is an asset to phrase targeted messages and use the right channels;
  • You have at least 5 years experience in a similar Management position with a good insight on non-profit specificities;
  • You are passionate by new communication technologies;
  • 1 à 3 years experience in Digital Marketing is preferred;
  • You have an excellent level of English (written and verbal). All messages from the SocieTy are in English. Local languages are an asset to liaise with suppliers.

  • A strong working knowledge of HTML, Word Press, Email campaigns, FB, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Youtube;
  • Excellent organization skills;
  • Negotiation skills to liaise with suppliers;
  • Good Project Management skills;
  • Strong written and oral abilities;
  • Very good proofreading skills to ensure all materials are high quality and accurate;
  • Proven leadership skills to drive team.
