Role Summary

Based in the CBI’s office in Brussels and reporting into the Director of Europe, the Senior Policy Adviser will be responsible for shaping the CBI’s views on key EU policies as part of the UK’s renewed relationship with the EU.

Operating in a global environment and working across the entire CBI, the individual will co-ordinate the CBI’s activities on EU trade policy including the CBI’s input into the business versions of the G20 and G7 (B20 and B7 respectively).

The individual will also lead liaison with key stakeholders in Brussels, Geneva and the UK.

Key Responsibilities

Support the creation and delivery of the CBI’s policy work on EU Trade Policy:

  • Deliver and develop the CBI’s EU trade work plan for 2020/21 focusing on key areas; UK-EU relationship, WTO, G7 and G20 and EU FTAs;
  • Own CBI member engagement on EU trade issues, including identifying key member input for ongoing and future consultations;
  • Ensure the delivery of high-quality briefings for the Director-General and Deputy Director General on trade and EU issues for meetings with political stakeholders and CBI members;
  • Work alongside colleagues in campaigns, international and press to maximise the impact of the CBI’s trade and international work with key stakeholders in the UK government, the EU institutions, G7, G20 and the WTO.

Manage the relationship with key stakeholders and partners:

  • Act as the key working level contact between the CBI and BusinessEurope, UK Mission to the EU, DG Trade and MEPs;
  • Represent the CBI at BusinessEurope, the CBI’s European umbrella organisation, ensuring CBI member positions are reflected in their positions on trade and investment;
  • Utilise key stakeholders through the CBI’s EU Trade Working Group to help scrutinise and inform the CBI’s work on corporate governance.

Support the CBI’s member recruitment and retention strategy by delivering an effective package of support for members:

  • Develop a strong member proposition on trade and investment, working collaboratively with colleagues from the commercial side of the business;
  • Distil the CBI’s political and practical insight on international trade into accessible content for members;
  • Assist the Europe Director in the marketing and the commercialisation of the products and services offered by CBI Brussels;
  • Contribute to the effective functioning and positioning of the CBI as an important strategic partner with the EU in a post-Brexit era.

Effectively run the CBI’s EU Trade Working Group to help inform and guide the CBI’s policy work

  • Proactively utilise EU Trade Working Groups as the primary vehicle for informing and testing the CBI’s policy work on trade policy;
  • Identify and agree topics for discussion and objectives for meetings with the Europe Director, produce content for the meetings, and ensure the timely delivery of high-quality briefings for members of the Committee.

Increase the membership of EU Trade Working Group to ensure it reflects a greater range of company types and interests, and that it contributes to the CBI’s objectives on diversity and inclusion.

Knowledge & Experience

What an individual must know or understand to be able to fulfil the role’s requirements

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent;
  • Experience working in government/EU/International affairs;
  • Background working in policy formulation and delivery;
  • Understanding of the key trends emerging in trade policy;
  • Understanding of the government’s and EU’s priorities related to trade policy;
  • Understanding of the policy development process and broad knowledge of the CBI’s policy priorities;
  • Knowledge of a range of modern campaigning & lobbying tools & techniques;
  • Knowledge of sales and marketing of policy products and services.

  • Campaign strategy and management – including developing objectives, planning approaches to delivery, and coordinating projects and messaging;
  • Project management – including planning, implementation (including risk management), closure and evaluation;
  • Communication and influencing – including excellent personal communication skills (oral and written) and the ability to plan and coordinate the influencing work of colleagues with key stakeholders;
  • Customer focus – including managing relationships with key members and other stakeholders to maintain member satisfaction and the CBI’s reputation;
  • High personal efficiency/productivity, flexible collaboration and team-working – including ability to work flexibly on multiple projects and tasks in parallel and manage competing (and fluid) priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced, pressured environment. Willingness to support colleagues and contribute to wider CBI activities.
